Congratulations to the winners of the 2020 Re|focus Sustainability Innovation Award! These winners were selected based on their innovation, environmental benefit, and market impact.

Description: A revolutionary new film technology that allows for fully-recyclable stand-up pouches with enhanced features. This new product offering provides substantially improved characteristics over existing competitive pouches including optical properties, strength, gloss, and tear. Additionally, the improved temperature resistance of this proprietary film technology can allow customers to run fully-recyclable pouches where competitive offerings have been unsuccessful. By enhancing the properties of an all-PE pouch, we allow customers to convert from non-recyclable structures to a Sustainable Packaging Coalition approved format. The potential utilization of the How2Recycle label will divert waste from landfill into the recycling stream, and will allow companies using rigid structures to convert to flexible formats without sacrificing recyclability. This will decrease the amount of waste in landfills, decrease materials usage with flexible conversion, and the operational benefits bring recyclable pouches from niche and difficult to run to mainstream.

Description: PureCycle Technologies uses post-consumer and post-industrial waste polypropylene. PureCycle Technologies’ process removes contaminants, odors and colors from recycled feedstock, producing highly desirable resin that is near virgin quality which can be used in consumer facing applications.

    • Cross Wrap Ltd

      Cross Wrap Dewiring machine (bale breaking machine). The machine is a patented bale wrapper for use together with 2-ram baler. This wrapping machine enables to wrap the bales directly from the balers chamber without the need for additional bale tying. The compact machine construction also provides very tight and litter-free wrapping operation, when the bale is never conveyed outside the unit without the protective wrapped layer.

      As part of their GreenArrow™ family of films, Charter NEX Films has developed and commercialized several flexible films from both the blown and cast film processes, for both food and non-food applications, utilizing post-consumer recycled (PCR) resins.

    • BioLogiQ

      NuPlastiQ is sold pure or in belnds with polyolefins or compostable resins. From the plastic convertor prospective, the blends are designed to be "drop in". NuPlastiQ has been proven to work in processes such as: (1) blow and cast film extrusion, (2) injection mold and (3) blow molding. 

    • Kenrich

      It is an additive powder or pellet masterbatch form designed to be added to a melt compounding device just like a color concentrate to catalyze dissimilar polymers #1 to #7 while coupling all fillers, pigments, reinforcements and organics to the polymers thus allowing a significant reduction in the cost of sorting and cleaning recycled plastics while improving their processing, properties, and appearance. Dosage levels are 1.0 to 1.5% of the pellet - or 0.75% of the powder by weight of the recycled material. 

    • Audia Elastomers

      Audia Elastomers has developed an 'OP' line of thermoplastic elastomers incorporating marine plastic content at up to 45%. 

    • Americas Styrenics

      AmSty has developed a free radical polymerization process with the capability of using post consumer recycle (PCR) dissolved in the reactor feed and polymerized to produce PCR content polysytrene resins for specific applications such as extruded, thermoformed polystyrene foam packaging, extruded craft foams, extruded foamed simulated wood, and injection molded cutlery and dinnerware. 

    • PolyOne Corporation 

      PolyOne has developed an additive that increases the amount of post-consumer recycle that can be incorporated into PET bottles. The product, SmartHeat RHC, is a process aid for PET preforms and rPET resin that tremendously improves recyclability in terms of recycled content, clarity, and processability. This solution has helped major brand owners reach 100% rPET in packaging products, aidng the global shift toward a circular economy. SmartHeat enables higher levels of rPET and improves the quality and performance of rPET. Additionally, it reduces energy consumption during the bottle blowing process, contributing toward reduced carbon emissions. 

    • Novolex 

      Our Eco Blend 75 T-Shirt bags are a convenient, environmentally preferred, and cost efficient way to transport purchases. The bag utilizes 75% high quality recycled content from our internal operations to reduce demand for virgin resin. The integral tab design and patented Quickmat EZ open feature means fast and convenient bagging, no waste to remove from the back, and easy restocking. The bags are designed to fit on a standard front end rack for easy loading. Eco Blend 75 is made from 100% recyclable HDPE resin. 

    • The Coca Cola Company 

      PCR (post consumer recycled) content incorporated into Dasani plastic closures. This means that paste packaging from recycle centers is treated, cleaned and processed to be used again in plastic packaging - specifically plastic Dasani closures. In the case of the material used to produce Dasani closures, the packaging goes through additional steps to clean the material to achieve food grade, FDA approved standards. HDPE (#2) bottles is the source material for the PCR content. 

    • Carbon, Inc. 

      Carbon RPU 130 is a breakthrough rigid polyurethane material for additive manufacturing that exhibits a combination of properties not previously demonstrated in the industry. This new high-performance material combines toughness, rigidity, and high temperature resistance in a single material—a previously unmet need. RPU 130 delivers not only superior performance in industrial applications, but also a material composition that addresses the urgent need for high-performance polymers that are also more environmentally sustainable. A milestone for the industry in joining unprecedented material properties with considerably reduced environmental burden, roughly 30% of RPU 130 is plant-derived. Achieving more sustainable materials is a central focus of Carbon’s materials development program. Thus, for RPU 130, to create not just a better performing plastic for parts and products, but a more sustainable one, Carbon incorporated a 100% bio-based building block (Susterra® propanediol, produced by DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Products).

    • Valeo Lighting Systems 

      100% Recycled polycarbonate from in-house propriety recovery and repelletization process used to manufacture pellets to be utilized in automative lighting headlamp lenses frames. This recovered material used in cosmedic multi-injection headlamp lenses that are coated with protective coatings. These lens frame applications require stricts color, opaqueness, and MFI viscosity control to meet the requirements. 

    • AZEK 

      TimberTech® is a premium portfolio of capped polymer and capped composite decking, as well as railing, porch, lighting and paver products. TimberTech is the decking brand of AZEK Building Products, an affiliate of The AZEK Company.

    • Songwon

      Songwon now provides plastic additives to resin producers and compounders globally in PE bags that contain 50% recycled content.

    • Star Plastics, Inc. 

      ReStart is an environmentally-friendly recycled-content material that performs in applications as a prime-alternative material. Using a combination of pre- and post-consumer materials, this product line features ABS, PC, PCFR and PC Alloys. ReStart products are high-performance, UL Recognized, and can be custom formulated and custom colored to fit unique application needs -- all while maintaining 35% - 50% recycled content.

    • Novolex
      Our UltraPost 40% PCR 2.25 mil Reusable Bags uses a minimum of 40% Third Party Certified Post-Consumer Recycled Content using 100% recyclable LDPE or MDPE resin. It meets EcoLogo ATP-001 standard for legislative areas adn is compliant with California Senate Bill 270 standards and can be used in a standard front-end rack for easy loading. 

    • Vartega

      Rec-NIR Black is a unique masterbatch that enables black HDPE and PET finished goods to be recycled using traditional automated recycling methods

    • LifeMade Products

      We have a home-compostable and marine-degradable PHA-based consumer straw (using Nodax by Danimer in partnership with WinCup). These products are certified by TUV Vincotte.
       
    • Plasticos a La Medida SA DE CV

      We recycle food waste from different sources, treat them and blend it with plastic resins in order to make a biobased plastic that could have from 40% to 60% of virgin or recycled plastic. The rest of the formula could be coffee waste from cafeterias, orange waste from industry, egg shells from industry, or wood waste from industry. 
       
    • Zeroplast 

      Zeroplast has developed a truly sustainable, bio-based and plastic free material called Zeroplast Free. Zeropast Free is not classified as plastic. Classification: Other packaging material, especially on biological basis. Zeroplast Free is patented.
       
    • Tecni-Plaster SLU

      Plasper WR is a desiccant masterbatch in pellet form. It is a calcium oxide plasticized with a mixture of polyolephines and helps to eliminate humidity during the extrusion and injectoin production process.

    • Eastman

      Carbon Renewal Technology (CRT), which breaks down waste plastics into molecular building blocks like carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen and turns those building blocks into new virgin-quality plastics. This technology gives new life to waste plastic – such as single-use plastic, textiles, carpet and other mixed plastics – by breaking it down to molecular level building blocks for acetyls and cellulosic production. Post-industrial and pre-consumer scrap feeds into the process, closing the loop on the mixed plastic lifecycle. Eastman developed an innovative way to modify the front end of our acetyls and cellulosic manufacturing processes to accept waste plastic feedstocks. Through Carbon Renewal Technology, waste plastics are broken down to molecular level building blocks, allowing it to be recycled an infinite number of times without degradation in properties or quality.  

    • PureCycle Technologies

      PureCycle Technologies uses post-consumer and post-industrial waste polypropylene. PureCycle Technologies’ process removes contaminants, odors and colors from recycled feedstock, producing highly desirable resin that is near virgin quality which can be used in consumer facing applications.

    • Clariter

      Clariter turns plastic waste that no one wants into high-value, pure products and ingredients that everyone needs. Through our revolutionary process, we make snow-white
      waxes, odourless and sulphur-free solvents, and white oils. These are ingredients in a vast array of end solutions ranging from cleaning agents, paints, coatings, leather conditioners, floor polishes, candles, shoe cream and many more. In time, we also foresee that our products will receive FDA approvals due to their exceptional purity, and may find their way into personal care items such as body lotions, creams, lip balms, and many more. Pharmaceutical grade solutions could be the next step further in the line.

    • Atando Cabos 

      Atando Cabos is a circular economy initiative that arises from the dream of restoring the coastal ecosystem of Patagonia, invaded by massive amounts of plastic from discarded fishing and fish farming gear (ropes, nets and buoys). Up to date, we’ve recovered and upcycled more than 1.800 tons of discarded plastic. Atando Cabos brings together communities, authorities and industry members to overcome all the challenges that the complex geography of Patagonia represents, to recover and recycle these discarded materials.We developed our own proprietary processes to obtain high quality raw materials: PP, PE, PA and EPS. These materials are then transformed into high quality and long life plastic products as pallets, crates, water harvesting systems, etc. We aim to support the brand owners to comply with their plastic-to-waste reduction goals without sacrificing business performance. Atando Cabos enables a new way for brand Owners to relate to their customers sharing a purpose and gaining trust with them.

    • SIPA spa

      Xtreme Renew combines two machines, the VACUREMA system by Erema and XTREME by SIPA. This is possible since both machines work with a continuous melt flow. The new Plastic Economy is now a reality and SIPA gives you the opportunity to be a part of it with a high added-value business model: producing food-grade preforms made from recycled PET flakes, in a circular economy concept.

      Recycling post-consumer and post-industrial materials at The AZEK Company’s dedicated recycling facility in Wilmington, Ohio, and its recycling capabilities at the Scranton, Pennsylvania manufacturing plant.
